Spanning over 2,000 square meters, the exhibition shows how people harnessed the energy of water and fire in the past. A key focus is the history of ironworking in the Sauerland region, as well as an exhibition area dedicated to folklore and cultural history. Visitors can also view various old power machines and explore the “Mechanization of Agriculture” section.

Located at the original site of a tool, link-chain, and machine factory in the Salwey Valley, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the working practices of the former small-scale iron industry. The focus is on former commercial enterprises such as iron forges and chain smithies. The tour takes visitors, among other things, through a large agricultural exhibition devoted to the theme “From Manual Labor to Machinery” and through an impressive collection of historic power machines, including two steam engines on stands, which are considered the oldest functioning ones in Germany.

The coexistence and interplay of early industry and the rural surroundings vividly illustrate traditional ways of life and economic activity. You feel transported back to the generation of your grandparents and great-grandparents.

During the Eslohe Steam Days at the end of May and the end of September, visitors can see the steam engines—some of which are 150 years old—in live operation. To present this area in an engaging way even on regular opening days, the Eslohe Museum uses multimedia displays and provides additional information about the history and functions of the steam engines. The Eslohe Museum is one of the most visited museums in the Hochsauerland district.
The DampfLandLeute Museum Eslohe is a member of the >Museumslandschaft Hochsauerland network and a highlight of >WasserEisenLand – Industrial Culture in Südwestfalen.
